Rendezvous with Rumpelstiltskin by Annalynne Russo

Summary:
Finn Rumpelstiltskin is a wealthy playboy descended from a long line of European royals. A count with boyish good lucks and an infectious smile, he seduces women with the grace and skill of a master swordsman. Until an insignificant one night stand changes his life forever. Horribly disfigured by a spurned lover and her sorceress mother, Finn is forced to learn the meaning of the phrase, Beauty is only skin-deep.

Katarina Krauss is a rare and exquisite jewel. On the cusp of womanhood, the talented weaver must decide whether to save her family from financial ruin, or follow her heart. Thrust into the hands of Aleksander Othman, a ruthless warlord eager to manipulate her gift and steal her virtue, Katarina must spin a heap of straw into a stack of gold.

Will Finn’s magic help Katarina escape Aleksander’s evil clutches? Can he win her heart and reclaim his soul?

This is Annalynne Russo’s first foray into novella length fiction and her first attempt at updating a fairy tale into something naughty.

Aleksander Othman is a greedy, wicked man. When Katarina Krauss’ father has the stupidity to boast that “she could spin straw into gold if given the chance”, Aleksander becomes obsessed with it and offers Katarina’s father a huge among of money—enough to pay his gambling debt.

But Aleksander didn’t want her just for her ability, but also for her femininity. She is barely 18 and a beauty who dreams of a better life. She had watched her mother struggle in a loveless marriage and will be damned if the same fate befalls her. He takes her to his castle and locks her in his dungeon demanding she spin straw into gold.

Desperate, Katarina searched for help and she gets it from the last  person she wanted: a man hobbled under a curse by witches, Finn Rumpelstiltskin.

I tried to like the book, but the story is unreal and the characters seemed fake. I can’t give it more than 2.5 stars.
